LG Glimmer

lg-glimmer.jpg

It appears that the LG Glimmer will be heading towards the Alltel camp, as evident in the photo above. The phone does not look bad at all. The LG Glimmer is a slider that kind of reminds me of the Motorola MOTORIZR. Okay, well not exactly, but its keypad looks RAZR like. The Glimmer hasn’t hit stores yet, but here are the specs:

* 1.9Ghz CDMA PCS, 800 MHz CDMA (Digital Dual-Band)
* 2.8-inch TFT (240 x 400 pixel, 262K colors) touchscreen display
* 2 megapixel camera with flash
* 128 MB onboard memory
* MicroSD slot
* Bluetooth 1.2
* Supported music files: MP3, WMA, AAC, and AAC+
* USB 2.0
* 3D graphics support for games
* Talk time: 3 hours and 30 minutes
* Standby time: 7 days

See the full specs sheet after the jump.

DORmino mouse: heat powered

dormino-mouse.jpg

The DORmino mouse is perfect for those who have laptops with heating issues…*cough* MacBook *cough*. I mean, I love my MacBook but that thing just burns up, especially when it’s charging. However, if this concept ever makes it into production, I’d forgive my MacBook’s heating issues.

The DORmino mouse converts the heat emitted from your laptop into electricity. It works by utilizing a large mouse pad that is placed underneath the laptop. The mouse pad collects the heat exhausted by the computer by using nanowires. It then transfers that heat in the form of electricity to the mouse via thermal inductors. The mouse itself appears to be a wireless optical mouse. The device is a concept for Core77’s Greener Gadget Design Competition 2008.

DORmino was designed by Cheong Yian Ling, Cindy Liew, Joanne Lin, and Lionel Wong of Singapore.

So what happens when the Apple iPhone hits 1,000 hours on the stopwatch? Does it recount from zero? Does it explode? Find out in the video below. You might want to fast forward the video to about 0:45 if you are a little impatient. For those wondering 1,000 hours is equivalent to 41.67 days.

ACU arming students with iPhones/iPod Touch

acu-free-iphones.jpg

Abilene Christian University in Texas is the first university in the U.S. to provide incoming freshmen with either an Apple iPhone or iPod Touch. Their reason: to allow students to “receive homework alerts, answer in-class surveys and quizzes, get directions to their professors’ offices, and check their meal and account balances.” The forward-thinking school aims to not only give out devices, but also intends on developing new web based software to further aid academic learning. Abilene Christian University’s high tech approach to learning is captured in the school-made video called “Connected,” which you can watch here.

I wish my college gave out free tech gadgets for enduring the 4-years of pain. I’m sure ACU will be getting a flood of new applicants this upcoming Fall term.

Google’s Android OS demo: plays Quake

android.jpg

Andy Rubin, one of the developers of Android and a Google minion, gave a demonstration of Google’s mobile OS to BBC. Rubin demonstrated the web browser, a quick game of Quake, and Google’s Street View. Android was running on a ‘reference design’ phone, featuring a 300 MHz processor. However, Android seemed to run flawlessly on the test hardware, as applications were loading snappily. However, interestingly, the Android OS is capable of supporting both touchscreen and non-touchscreen phones. For non-touchscreen phones, some sort of “track/scroll pad” will be needed. Sorry, no multi-touch here (sorry, pinchers). The best part had to be the Quake demo, which was amazingly running at 30 fps. Not bad.

Enjoy the vid.

Japanese Robot: almost a Ninja

Check out this clip of a laying Japanese robot attempting to jump to its feet to stand up. Amazingly, it ‘almost’ can. It doesn’t appear to be able to stand up straight though. Can’t wait for the Ninja robots!

Samsung AirCon: cleans the air too

samsung_aircon.jpg

Samsung has unleashed a new air conditioner that not only provides cool, freshing air but also cleans and removes odor from the air. In fact, the new air conditioner can kill 78 percent of fungus and 58 percent of bacteria (in a 30-minute time frame) thanks to Samsung’s Micro Plasma Ion (MPI) technology. Along with the MPI, the aircon also sports a carbon deodorizer that removes odors and kills bacteria and a green tea extract filter that aids in sanitizing the air. Amazingly, the new air conditioner is 30% more energy efficient that traditional aircon units.

The Samsung bacteria-killing air conditioner is out in Singapore and will set you back $799 to $899 Singapore dollars ($571 - $643 USD), depending on which model you choose.
