If you are someone who fears getting food-borne illnesses, or if you are just a germaphobe in general, then the Germ Eliminating Knife Block is for you. Similar to what hospitals use to disinfect their life saving instruments, the Germ Eliminating Knife Block uses UV-C light to destroy 99.99% of bacteria from your kitchen knifes. Now you can chop up your chicken, stick your knife into the knife block and within seconds, you can use that same knife to chop up your salad.

The ultraviolet bulb within the Germ Eliminating Knife Block heats up to dry your knives and sterilize them in about 20 seconds. You merely have to rinse your knives before putting them in and the Germ Eliminating Knife Block will do the rest. The gadget can be set to turn on upon inserting a knife or it can be set to turn on automatically every 3 hours. It has 5 knife slots and works with any knife up to 8.75-inch long. You can purchase the Germ Eliminating Knife Block at Hammacher Schlemmer for $89.95.

What’s the point? You still have to rinse the knife under water and frankly thats all I do when I chop different kinds of food. I don’t do that because I am afraid of germs, I do that because I don’t want chicken blood and bits of raw flesh in my salad. If the chicken you buy has so much germs that it is a health issue, you are buying them from the wrong place.
Additionally, hospitals don’t desinfect their tools with UV light, but either with super heated pressurized steam (autoclave method) or gamma radiation (Cobalt-60 method).
