The Lumen Smart Bulb by Tabu is an alternative to the Philips Hue line of light bulbs. Both the Tabu Lumen Smart Bulb and the Philips Hue share the same core functionality. They both will allow you turn on/off the lights in your house without you needing to get off your ass to flick a switch. Simply fire up the smartphone app and tap a few buttons to adjust the lights to your satisfaction. The smartphone app works via Bluetooth and it also allows you to adjust the color and brightness of the bulb. Unlike the Philips Hue, the Tabu Lumen Smart Bulb does not require you to purchase a special hub. Simply turn on your Bluetooth and use the app. Keep reading for a demonstration.
Since both bulbs are LED lights, they are more efficient than your standard traditional light bulb. What separates the Tabu Lumen Smart Bulb from the Philips Hue is that they sport unique modes to set the mood: party, romance, relaxation, call mode, music mode, and wake up mode. The “Party mode” on the Tabu bulbs will cause the lights to flash random colors, turning your room into a rave. The “Romance mode” creates the perfect intimate setting for your date night. The “Relaxation mode” creates a calm mood to help you relax and sleep. The “Call mode” will cause the lights to alert you when you receive a call on your cell phone. The “Music mode” will cause the lights to dance in sync with your music. And finally, the “Wake Up mode” will gradually increase the brightness of the bulbs in the morning until it wakes you at the set time. The smartphone app that controls the bulbs allows you to choose up to 16 million colors to customize to your heart’s content. It also allows you to create “groups” of up to 10 Smart Bulbs so that you can control a whole set of lights real easy and quick if you happen to purchase more than one bulb.
The Tabu Lumen Smart Bulb is a warm white 3000K 7 Watt bulb for a total of 400 lumens, which is about equal to a 40 Watt incandescent light bulb. The app to control the bulbs is currently only available on the Apple store — an Android version of the app is in the works. The Lumen Smart Bulb costs $69.99 direct from Tabu. For comparison, the Philips Hue (with an output of 600 lumens) costs $199.95 for a starter pack which includes 3 light bulbs. But, there is no party mode on the Hue and who doesn’t like to party?
